Description
What kind of wine it is
Solaia 2001 by Marchesi Antinori is a prestigious Tuscan red wine born from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Cabernet Franc, produced at the renowned Tenuta Tignanello in the heart of Chianti Classico. This label represents one of the highest expressions of Italian viticulture and is made only in vintages considered exceptional. The 2001 vintage stands out for its balance, depth, and great elegance, perfectly embodying the style of the Solaia cru, capable of combining concentration, finesse, and extraordinary ageing potential.
Where it comes from
The wine originates from the homonymous Solaia vineyard, located at Tenuta Tignanello in the hilly area of Chianti Classico in Tuscany. The stony soils and Mediterranean climate, characterized by significant temperature differences between day and night, promote a balanced ripening of the grapes. The 2001 vintage was considered exceptional for the region: the ideal weather conditions and the alternation between warm days and cool nights allowed the grapes to achieve perfect ripeness, with great aromatic concentration and excellent natural freshness.
How it is produced
The grapes are harvested between the end of September and mid-October, carefully selecting only the best bunches. In the cellar, the bunches are gently destemmed and the berries meticulously selected before pressing. The alcoholic fermentation and maceration take place in 60 hl truncated cone-shaped vats, precisely controlling the extraction of aromatic and tannic components. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation in barriques and matures in French and Hungarian oak barrels for about 18 months. The different lots, vinified separately by variety, are finally blended to define the final blend.
Tasting notes
In the glass it shows a deep ruby red colour. The bouquet is intense and complex, with aromas of ripe black fruits accompanied by elegant notes of tobacco, graphite, and spices. On the palate, the wine is rich, concentrated, and enveloping, supported by a well-defined tannic structure that provides balance and depth to the sip. The finish is long, precise, and persistent, revealing a refined aromatic complexity and great ageing potential.
Food pairings
Thanks to its imposing structure and aromatic richness, it pairs perfectly with robust meat dishes. It is ideal with grilled red meats, roasts, and game preparations, but also accompanies braised meats and aged cheeses with great balance. In Tuscan culinary tradition, it naturally pairs with Florentine steak or intense dishes such as stewed wild boar.
When to serve it
Solaia 2001 is an ideal wine for special occasions and dedicated tastings, when you want to enjoy a bottle that offers maturity, elegance, and depth. Served at a temperature of about 16–18 °C in large glasses, it allows the bouquet to fully develop. The structure and balance of this vintage have supported its extraordinary ageing capacity. The bottle comes from a private collection, stored in suitable conditions and examined by experts to guarantee its condition and authenticity.
