Château Pavie
Château Pavie is one of the great names of Saint-Émilion, Premier Grand Cru Classé "A" since 2012. Its name recalls the ancient red-fleshed peaches that grew on this hillside, where as early as the 4th century the Romans planted the first vines. In 1850 Pavie was listed among the leading crus of Saint-Émilion, and between 1873 and 1912 Ferdinand Bouffard brought together several small estates to around 50 hectares; in 1919 Château Pavie was officially born.
In 1955 the estate was classified Premier Grand Cru Classé "B". In 1998 Gérard and Chantal Perse, who had arrived in Saint-Émilion in 1993, purchased the château and embarked on a thorough renovation; since 2005 their daughter Angélique and son-in-law Henrique have also joined the management.
The vineyard, about 42 hectares in a single south-facing block sheltered from north winds, unfolds over three levels: the limestone plateau, between 85 and 110 meters, with clay-limestone soils over asteriated limestone; the côte, with deep clays over friable limestone; and the pied de côte, sandier and gravelly. Merlot covers about half the vineyard, Cabernet Franc 30% and Cabernet Sauvignon 20%.
Alongside the grand vin comes Arômes de Pavie. In the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, Château Pavie expresses with power and elegance the great terroir of Saint-Émilion.
