Description
What kind of wine it is
Barbaresco Palàs by Michele Chiarlo is a red wine from Piedmont made from Nebbiolo grapes. It displays a structured and complex style thanks to fermentation in stainless steel and prolonged maceration on the skins. Ageing in large oak barrels and later in the bottle contributes to freshness, refined tannins, and great ageing potential.
Where it comes from
Barbaresco Palàs originates from the Barbaresco area, in the province of Cuneo. The historic vineyards are found on marl-calcareous clay soils rich in silt, while other vineyards in Treiso lie on sandier soils.
How it is produced
The Nebbiolo grapes are hand-harvested for optimal bunch selection. After destemming, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel, with maceration on the skins for 13-14 days to extract colour, tannins, and aromas. After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures in large wooden casks for at least 18 months, developing complexity and structure before continuing its ageing in bottle.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it appears deep garnet red with orange reflections. The bouquet is complex and refined, with small red fruits like cherry and raspberry, hints of green pepper and fine spices. On the palate it is full and supported by good acidity and velvety tannins that lend structure and ageing potential. The finish is long and harmonious, with lingering fruit and a subtle spicy nuance.
Food pairings
Barbaresco Palàs pairs well with roasted red meats and game, including slow-cooked beef braise. It is also suitable with mature hard cheeses.
When to serve
Barbaresco Palàs is approachable after a period of bottle ageing. The structure of Nebbiolo and maturation in large casks allow for gradual evolution, with tannins softening and aromas gaining complexity over time.
