Description
What kind of wine is it?
Beaune 1er Cru Les Sizies from Domaine de Montille is a red wine made from Pinot Noir grapes from the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. This Premier Cru displays a fruit-driven style, with fine texture and a vibrant drinkability even in its youth. Vinification in large wooden barrels and partial use of whole clusters help maintain a fresh and precise profile, while aging in mostly used barriques strikes a balance between elegance and aging potential.
Where does it come from?
It originates from the Beaune appellation, at the heart of the Côte de Beaune, from the Les Sizies climat classified as Premier Cru. The 1.62-hectare plot sits at the base of the slope on clay soils that retain moisture and promote even ripening. The continental climate, with significant temperature swings, preserves acidity and aromatic definition, while the valley floor location provides juiciness and immediacy balanced by the fine tannins typical of local Pinot Noir.
How is it produced?
The grapes are brought to the cellar for maceration and fermentation in large wooden vats with gentle extraction to emphasize finesse and succulence. About one third of the batch is left as whole clusters, a choice that increases aromatic complexity and contributes to the tannic structure without weighing down the profile. The wine ages in barriques with a small proportion of new oak, integrating spice and roundness without overshadowing the fruit. The domaine has practiced organic farming since 1995 and has been biodynamic since 2005.
Tasting notes
It shows a brilliant ruby red color with lively highlights. The nose offers aromas of small red fruits like cherry and raspberry, together with floral notes and subtle spicy and earthy hints from carefully measured wood and whole cluster fermentation. On the palate, it is soft but vibrant, with present acidity, a fruity mid-palate, and silky tannins supporting a clean, harmonious, and persistent finish.
Food pairings
It pairs easily with roast poultry thanks to its measured structure and freshness that cleanses the palate. It enhances artisanal cured meats without overpowering their spicy notes and is a perfect match for white meat in sauce, mushrooms, and veal dishes. A classic regional pairing is coq au vin bourguignon, which finds harmony in the wine’s juiciness and delicate touch.
When to serve it
It is ideal for lunch or dinner when looking for an elegant and smooth red that can accompany food without weighing it down. Serve at around 15–16 °C in a large glass. A brief decanting will enhance its spice and fruit notes. The wine is enjoyable from its youth and can evolve beautifully, retaining freshness, texture, and complexity for several years in the cellar.
