Description
What kind of wine is it
Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is a structured and deep red wine, obtained from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. Its profile strikes a balance between freshness and ageing potential, with fermentations in stainless steel and cement tanks and ageing in barriques. This creates a complex style, with well-integrated tannins and an intricate aromatic texture.
Where does it come from
Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia originates from the coastal hills of Bolgheri, in Tuscany, where the Mediterranean climate and the area's sunshine foster excellent ripening. The Bolgheri vineyards embody the character of the coastal territory, known for producing red wines with a well-defined character.
How it's made
The grapes are hand-harvested in crates with meticulous selection of the bunches. After destemming, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and cement tanks, with macerations lasting about fifteen days. Malolactic fermentation continues in barriques, partly new and partly second-use. Maturation proceeds for 18 months in barriques and at least 12 months in bottle, delivering complexity and excellent potential for evolution.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it appears intense ruby red with garnet highlights. On the nose, scents of Mediterranean shrubland, aromatic herbs, cypress berries, and ripe blackberry emerge. The palate is full and enveloping, with dense tannins and balanced acidity. The finish is long and lively, recalling dark fruit, spices, and light toasty notes.
Food pairings
This Bolgheri Superiore pairs well with grilled red meats, such as Florentine steak, creating harmony between the wine’s structure and the meat’s juiciness. It also suits dishes like Tuscan wild boar ragù and matured cheeses such as Tuscan pecorino. Internationally, it accompanies English-style roast beef, supporting the wine’s tannic texture.
When to serve it
It’s best to serve Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia in a large glass to enhance its aromas. The wine is rewarding after a few years in the cellar and promises a good ageing potential thanks to its 18 months in barrique and 12 months in bottle.
