Description
What kind of wine it is
Bolgheri Superiore by Ornellaia is a structured red wine made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. It originates from the Tuscan Tyrrhenian coast and displays a complex style with aging potential. The profile remains elegant and decisive, with notes of ripe fruit and dense tannins. Vinification takes place in stainless steel and cement vats, followed by aging in barriques and tonneaux to offer savoriness and balance.
Where it comes from
This Bolgheri Superiore comes from the Ornellaia Estate in Bolgheri, in the Tuscan Maremma. The microclimate benefits from significant temperature differences due to the proximity of the sea. The gravelly and sandy soils promote drainage and a mineral imprint, while the alluvial soils allow for deep vine rooting. Bolgheri is a historic area, known for structured reds with good longevity.
How it is produced
The grapes are hand-picked in crates with double bunch selection, ensuring only the best berries reach the winery. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel and cement vats at controlled temperature, with about 15 days of skin maceration to extract color and tannins. Malolactic fermentation occurs in oak barriques. Aging continues for 18 months in medium-toast tonneaux and for another 12 months in the bottle before release.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red color with violet hues. The bouquet is broad, with aromas of ripe wild berries, black cherry, and plum, together with notes of vanilla, tobacco, and sweet spices. On the palate, it offers a full and enveloping body, smooth tannins, and balanced freshness. The sip highlights harmony between dark fruit and toasted touches, with a long, savory, and persistent finish.
Food pairings
This Bolgheri Superiore pairs well with structured dishes such as grilled beef fillets, braised wild boar, and aged cheeses, especially Tuscan pecorino. Regionally, it accompanies peposa Livornese, a peppery beef stew. Internationally, it matches with roasted game and enhances rich meats and intense aromas.
When to serve it
It is recommended to serve this Bolgheri Superiore at 17-18°C, after about an hour of decanting. The wine is suitable for medium-term cellaring, with evolutionary potential of 10-12 years. Ideal for special occasions and important meals, it expresses its character best between the third and tenth year, when tannins and aromas reach full integration.
