Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2017 Biondi-Santi Tenuta Greppo
Description
The Brunello par excellence, from the famous Tenuta Il Greppo di Biondi Santi, majestic, solemn, noble, among the wines that have made the history of the denomination.
It comes from a particular type of Sangiovese Grosso grape, the BBS11 clone (Brunello Biondi Santi, vine n°11), identified and expertly selected by the Biondi Santis on the Il Greppo estate itself, whose bunches are harvested from plants having an age can range from 10 to 25 years. The must ferments on the skins under controlled conditions, then it is left to mature, like any self-respecting great aged red, in wood, and in particular in Slavonian oak barrels for a period of never less than 3 years. A very long evolution in the bottle follows in the silence and stillness of the historic aging cellar.
The 2017 vintage
2016 was a year with a rainy winter and a rainy and temperate spring. The summer was characterized by temperatures generally below average, with the rains at the end of August / beginning of September which extended the pre-harvest period, leading to a slow and very balanced ripening of the grapes.
The manual harvest began on 19 September more than a week later than the average for Biondi-Santi. Bright ruby red in colour, it offers a scent of sweet and fragrant fruit, with hints of cherry dominating the olfactory framework, as is typical of high hill Sangiovese. Aromas of blood orange and small red berried fruits are added to the cherry, in addition to balsamic sensations and scented herbs. In the mouth, structure, elegance and freshness come together to form something truly special, with velvety tannins that immerse themselves in a highly balanced taste experience. The finish is very long and savory, worthy of a Brunello with an extraordinary personality.
