Description
What kind of wine is it?
Brunello di Montalcino Biondi-Santi represents a winemaking masterpiece, blending history and prestige in a refined and complex expression. This excellent interpretation by Tenuta Il Greppo continues to embody the vision of Clemente Santi, founder of a tradition handed down for over 150 years. The Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is a still red wine made from Sangiovese Grosso, the very first Brunello in history, known for its complex personality, elegant structure, and extraordinary capacity to evolve over time, remaining true to the distinctive Biondi-Santi style.
Where does it come from
The Brunello di Montalcino 2020 was produced from a careful selection of grapes from the estate’s own vineyard parcels at Tenuta Il Greppo. The vintage was marked by a mild, dry winter with above-average temperatures, followed by a cool spring with strong temperature variations and an exceptional snowfall at the end of March, which did not affect the vineyards thanks to late budbreak. A rainy June ensured sufficient water reserves, while a hot, dry summer with excellent day-night temperature swings favored vegetative balance and aromatic development; rain at the end of August preceded the harvest, which began on September 9th.
How is it made
Vinification in 2020 took place in oak barrels, concrete, and stainless steel, with the exclusive use of indigenous yeasts from the estate’s vineyards, a choice that enhances authenticity and terroir expression. Fermentation was managed to preserve aromatic finesse and structural balance. The wine was then aged for 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, encouraging a slow and harmonious evolution according to Biondi-Santi tradition.
Tasting notes
Visually, it displays a bright ruby red color with the typical transparency of Sangiovese. On the nose it is layered and refined, with notes of ripe red fruits, aromatic herbs, delicate floral tones, and subtle balsamic nuances. On the palate it expresses balance and depth, supported by vivid acidity and dense but elegant tannins, with a long, consistent progression that reflects the even climate of the vintage.
Food pairings
This wine naturally pairs with roast and braised red meats, game, and structured dishes from Tuscan tradition. Its freshness and balanced tannic texture make it ideal with bistecca alla fiorentina and slow-cooked dishes. Also excellent with aged cheeses, especially Tuscan pecorino, where its structure and persistence find harmony.
When to serve it
This is a wine designed for special occasions and dedicated tastings. Serve at 16–18 °C in large glasses and consider a brief oxygenation or decanting in its early years. The structure and balance of the 2020 vintage support long bottle ageing, with evolution that can deliver further complexity over time.
