Description
What kind of wine it is
Iss by Tenuta San Francesco is a red wine from Campania made exclusively from Tintore di Tramonti grapes. It ferments in steel to preserve its aromatic clarity and varietal character, then matures for a long time in oak barrels to add depth and maintain tension. The style offers fullness and structure, with fine tannins and a savoury note that supports the drink, making it suitable for ageing in the bottle as well.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from Tramonti, in the inland area of the Amalfi Coast (province of Salerno), where viticulture develops on steep terraces. The vineyards, situated between 300 and 600 metres in altitude, benefit from a cool climate with significant temperature variations. The calcareous-dolomitic soils with the presence of volcanic pyroclasts contribute to the mineral component and well-defined tannic texture.
How it is produced
The harvest takes place late, between the end of October and the first ten days of November, with manual picking and selection of bunches from century-old and pre-phylloxera vines. After destemming, fermentation takes place in steel, with carefully controlled maceration to extract colour and tannins without excess. Ageing continues for 18–24 months in oak barrels and for about six months in bottle, so as to integrate wood and substance.
Tasting notes
In the glass it displays a deep ruby red colour with violet hues. The nose is profound, with notes of undergrowth, wild blackberry, graphite and ash, supported by a clear mineral imprint. The palate is vibrant and savoury, with a full body and velvety tannins; the progression remains compact up to a long and persistent finish, reaffirming its suitability for ageing.
Food pairings
It pairs well with red meats, game, and aged cheeses, thanks to its structure and polished tannins that support succulence and intensity. The savoury texture and persistence help handle rich and spiced dishes, enhancing the flavour without making the sip heavy.
Serving suggestions
It is suitable for important lunches and meat dinners, when a concentrated yet dynamic red is desired. It shows its best at 16–18 °C, with brief aeration to favour the release of aromas and the integration of the tannins. Maturation in oak and the solidity of the grape variety also allow for evolution in the bottle for several years, if well stored.
