Description
What kind of wine is it?
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Collezione del Conte di Filicaja by Villa da Filicaja is a red wine from Montepulciano grapes grown on clay soils in Tocco da Casauria. It stands out for its structure and aromatic depth, with a balance between body and freshness. Fermentation in temperature-controlled steel and three months of aging in wooden barrels provide elegance and polished tannins, allowing the wine to clearly express the character of the grape variety and its terroir.
Where does it come from?
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Collezione del Conte di Filicaja originates in Tocco da Casauria, in the province of Pescara, on clay-rich soils that retain moisture and promote marked minerality. The local climate, influenced by the Mediterranean and significant temperature variations, ensures a slow ripening of the grapes. These conditions support good freshness and aromatic concentration, typical elements of the wine’s style.
How is it produced?
The Montepulciano grapes are handpicked in early October with careful bunch selection. After destemming and gentle crushing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature to preserve varietal aromas. Three months of aging in medium-toast wooden barrels smooth the tannins and develop aromatic complexity, without added aromas or adjustments, so the wine remains true to its origin.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it presents a deep ruby red color with violet highlights. On the nose, it offers an intense bouquet of ripe red fruit such as cherry and plum, with hints of jam, licorice, vanilla, and a slight wood toast. The palate shows full structure, robust yet integrated tannins, a velvety sensation, and a lingering finish reminiscent of sweet spices and dark chocolate.
Food pairings
Thanks to its structure and aromatic profile, this Montepulciano d’Abruzzo pairs perfectly with red meat dishes such as roast lamb, arrosticini from Abruzzo, and grilled meats. It’s also ideal with aged hard cheeses and high-percentage dark chocolate. Among regional pairings, arrosticini and pasta alla chitarra with lamb ragù are recommended, where the fat content matches well with the wine’s tannins.
When to serve it
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Collezione del Conte di Filicaja is ready a few months after bottling, but thanks to its structure and barrel aging, it can evolve for several years. For a fresher sip, it’s best enjoyed within the first 2-3 years, while those seeking softer profiles will benefit after 4-6 years. The ideal serving temperature is between 16 and 18 °C, which enhances the aromas and balances the tannic structure.
