Description
What kind of wine it is
Mas La Plana by Torres is a still red wine produced in Alt Penedès, Catalonia, from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Vinification includes fermentation in stainless steel and large oak barrels, followed by a prolonged maceration on the skins. Ageing in French oak barriques develops mature tannins and a balanced structure, while preserving freshness and a defined aromatic profile. The result is an internationally-styled red, balanced between fruit, spices, and structure.
Where it comes from
The grapes are sourced from the historic Mas La Plana vineyards, an estate of 29 hectares in Alt Penedès. The vineyards lie at about 225 meters above sea level, in an area characterized by well-drained alluvial soils made up of gravel, sand, and clay. This environment brings aromatic intensity, structure, and fruit clarity to the wine.
How it is made
Harvest takes place when the Cabernet Sauvignon reaches full phenolic ripeness. After destemming, fermentation occurs in stainless steel vats and large oak foudres, with maceration on the skins for 15–25 days to extract color and structure. Ageing lasts around 18 months, mainly in French oak barriques (some new), with a small part in large oak foudres and stainless steel. This process balances the spicy notes of wood with freshness and fruit purity.
Tasting notes
In the glass it shows a deep, compact ruby red color. The nose reveals intense aromas of ripe black fruits, sweet spices, balsamic hints, and light roasting notes. On the palate it is full and structured, with velvety tannins and well-integrated acidity. The finish is long and persistent, returning to black fruit, spices, and smoky accents, and shows balance and precision.
Food pairings
Mas La Plana pairs well with grilled red meats, important roasts, and aged hard cheeses. Its structure and the spicy notes from the oak also make it suitable for Catalan dishes such as baked or braised lamb. A particularly recommended pairing is grilled lamb with aromatic herbs, which recalls the wine’s balsamic component. Grilled entrecôte is also a good option.
When to serve it
It is ideal when you want a structured yet balanced wine, suited for important dinners as well as meat-based lunches. Thanks to its construction, it evolves towards more complex aromas and retains freshness and flavor over time, showing good ageing potential in the cellar.
