Description
What kind of wine is it
Rosso Commodo by Tenuta San Leo is a structured red wine made from Montepulciano and Cesanese grapes grown in the hills of Castelli Romani. It has a full-bodied profile, with well-integrated tannins and a defined texture thanks to aging in Allier oak barriques. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel with maceration on the skins for at least fifteen days and regular pump-overs. The character is harmonious and suited for those seeking a complex red with aging potential.
Where does it come from
Rosso Commodo originates in the Castelli Romani area, within the Roma denomination, on hills about 310 meters above sea level. The vineyards grow on medium-textured soils. The Mediterranean climate promotes balanced ripening, bringing freshness and a sense of place. The region’s historical roots emerge in the authentic character of this wine.
How is it produced
The grapes, harvested in the second decade of October, are carefully selected and destemmed before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Skin maceration lasts at least fifteen days with punch-downs and pump-overs. The wine ages for fifteen months in Allier oak barriques, then rests for six months in bottle. This process develops body and roundness, while further bottle maturation harmonizes the tannins and stabilizes the aromatic profile.
Tasting notes
In the glass, Rosso Commodo displays an intense ruby red color with purple highlights. The nose presents scents of red fruit jam, sweet spices, vanilla, licorice, and light toasted notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with polished tannins and balanced acidity that provide freshness. The finish is long, with persistent fruity and spicy notes and a harmonious close.
Food pairings
The structure and tannins of Rosso Commodo make it perfect with roasted red meats, braised or stewed dishes. It also pairs well with aged cheeses, which balance its smoothness. In regional cuisine, it complements amatriciana pasta and Roman-style braised beef. Rustic polenta further highlights the versatility of this wine.
When to serve
Rosso Commodo should be served at 18-20 °C in large glasses to enhance its aromas and structure. It can be enjoyed immediately but reaches its best after at least two years of bottle aging and can evolve further. It is suitable for convivial gatherings and special occasions, matching well with hearty dishes and relaxed tastings.
