Description

What kind of wine is it?

Atticus by Bellevue is a red Cape Blend made from Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot, produced in Stellenbosch. The vinification involves cold maceration and controlled fermentation, followed by malolactic fermentation in French and American oak barriques. The style is structured and rich in ripe fruit, with present tannins when young and the ability to evolve towards greater finesse. The integration of the wood underpins a complex profile, and the wine offers a character that reflects South African identity.

Where does it come from?

This wine originates in Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape, an area renowned for its blended reds. The Mediterranean–oceanic climate, with dry summers and wide temperature swings, favors freshness and clear aromatic definition. The vineyards grow on vocated soils, suitable for complete ripening and a firm tannic structure. Water management varies between dry farming and drip irrigation depending on the grape variety. This territorial combination offers structure, intensity, and balance.

How is it produced?

The grapes are hand-harvested and quickly taken to the cellar to preserve aromas and freshness. After a cold maceration, fermentation lasts for about four days with daily pump-overs to extract color and phenolic compounds. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French and American oak barriques, contributing to roundness and stability. The Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot batches are blended and aged for eleven months in wood, resulting in an integrated and complex profile.

Tasting notes

In the glass, it presents an intense ruby red color with purple highlights. The nose offers dark plum and ripe wild berries, followed by vanilla and sweet spices from the oak with a well-balanced toasted component. On the palate, it appears broad and bold, with full body, dense tannins, and freshness that keeps the sip defined. The finish is long and harmonious, with lingering notes of black fruit and well-integrated oak, tending towards greater balance with time.

Food pairings

Atticus pairs with rich and flavorful dishes, where structure and tannin enhance meats and slow-cooked recipes. It is ideal with lamb stew, roasts, and grilled meats and also suits game and aged cheeses. In a South African context, it accompanies bobotie, thanks to the interplay between sweet spices, dark fruit, and oak notes. For Italian cuisine, it supports important beef braises or meat ragouts and brings out the dish’s complexity.

When to serve it

This wine is well suited to meat-based dinners, especially in cooler months, and it expresses itself best at a controlled temperature between 16 and 18°C. When young, it benefits from brief oxygenation to soften the tannins and enhance the fruit. Thanks to the structure and wood aging, it can be cellared for several years and will gain elegance and depth over time. The optimal drinking period is within 6-8 years from bottling, depending on storage conditions.
