Description
What kind of wine is it?
Capatosta by Poggio Argentiera is a Toscana Rosso made from a blend of Sangiovese and Alicante, produced in Maremma, in southern Tuscany. The winemaking process involves maceration on the skins, fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature, and maturation also in steel, resulting in a straightforward and easy-to-read profile. The result is a warm, structured red, with prominent tannins and a fruity character highlighted by hints of liquorice.
Where does it come from?
It originates in Maremma from grapes harvested in the vineyards around Baccinello at approximately 350 m a.s.l. The soils, rich in alluvial pebbles and predominantly calcareous clays, contribute to the wine’s solid texture and defined palate. Poggio Argentiera was founded in 1997 with the purchase of Podere Adua and has practiced organic farming since 2009.
How is it produced?
Harvesting is done by hand. After picking, the grapes macerate on the skins for about two weeks, then ferment in stainless steel at a controlled temperature. After fermentation, the wine remains in steel for maturation, maintaining aromatic purity and a clear expression of fruit, with a balanced extraction and structure achieved during maceration.
Tasting notes
A lively ruby red in the glass. On the nose, it opens with forest fruits, raspberry, and cassis, finished with a touch of liquorice. On the palate, the taste is warm and sustained, with sculpted tannins that provide pace to the sip and support a persistent finish, consistent with the fruity and spicy profile perceived on the nose.
What does it pair with?
It naturally pairs with grilled red meats, where the wine’s structure matches the succulence of the dish. The suggested pairing is a Florentine steak served with grilled vegetables, balancing aromatic intensity and tannic texture.
When to serve it
It is ideal when looking for a structured red, with notable tannins and a clear fruity profile. The choice of steel fermentation and maturation makes it suitable for social occasions and meals centred on meat courses, where the wine’s persistence can accompany rich dishes without losing definition.
