Description

What kind of wine is it

Masseto is a Bolgheri red wine made from Merlot grapes grown in its namesake vineyard. It offers a structured and full-bodied style, with a dense tannic texture and great aging potential. The freshness provided by the proximity to the sea balances the fruit concentration. Parcel vinification and aging in French oak barriques define a precise and deep aromatic complexity, making this wine suitable for long aging.

Where does it come from

The Masseto vineyard is located on the Tuscan coast, in the Bolgheri area, and is divided into three subzones: Masseto Centrale, Masseto Junior, and Masseto Alto. The mild-temperate climate and sea breezes promote full ripening of the grapes while maintaining balance and freshness. The vineyard soils retain moisture and support fruit concentration and solid tannic structure. The parcel-based approach enhances the different expressions of the terroir and gives intensity and precision to the wine.

How is it produced

The grapes are hand-picked and go through a double selection on sorting belts, then are gently crushed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled wooden vats, with each parcel vinified and aged separately to preserve their unique qualities. Maceration on the skins lasts between 21 and 28 days, followed by malolactic fermentation in new French oak barriques. Aging continues in barriques for 24 months, with blending after the first 12 months, and follows with further bottle aging before release.

Tasting notes

In the glass, Masseto shows a deep ruby red color with garnet reflections. On the nose it offers intensity and complexity, with notes of ripe dark fruit, dark chocolate, licorice, and violet, along with spicy and toasted hints from the oak. On the palate it is full and concentrated, with a silky texture and polished tannins. The balance between power and freshness sustains a long finish, with balsamic and spicy returns accompanying the close.

Food pairings

Masseto pairs well with structured dishes, where its aromatic richness complements succulence and savoriness. It is ideal with roasted or grilled red meats, braises, game, and mushrooms. In Tuscan cuisine, it matches with "bistecca alla fiorentina" and stewed wild boar. The tannic structure and oak aging also suit aged hard cheeses. Its freshness and length allow pairings with rich and spicy dishes.

When to serve it

This is a red wine suitable for occasions when you desire an intense and already harmonious profile, with further aging potential. It is recommended to open the bottle in advance and, if necessary, decant to promote oxygenation and tannin softening. The ideal serving temperature is 16–18 °C in a large glass. Masseto is suited for both immediate enjoyment and cellaring for several years, thanks to its structure and aging process.
