Description
What type of wine it is
Masseto is a Bolgheri red made from Merlot grapes from the eponymous vineyard. Its style is broad, enveloping and structured, with a deep aromatic maturity supported by freshness that balances its richness. The tannins, vigorous in youth, refine over time and lead to a lively, well-balanced palate. It is already enjoyable, with excellent potential for bottle ageing.
Where it comes from
The grapes come from the Masseto vineyard in the Bolgheri area on the Tuscan coast, divided into three sub-zones: Masseto Centrale, Masseto Junior and Masseto Alto. The mild, temperate climate and the nearby sea breezes favour a complete and even ripening. Each portion of the vineyard expresses its own characteristics, contributing to the wine’s complexity.
How it is made
Each portion of the vineyard is hand-harvested and vinified separately. After a double sorting and gentle crushing, fermentation takes place at controlled temperature in stainless steel and in troncoconical oak vats, followed by a maceration lasting several weeks. Malolactic fermentation occurs in new French oak barriques, where the wine ages for 24 months, with blending halfway through. After bottling, it undergoes a further 12 months of bottle ageing.
Tasting notes
The aromatic profile is rich and intense, with notes of ripe fruit and spices merging with balsamic and menthol tones. On the palate it is broad, enveloping and structured. The tannins have refined over time, leaving a lively palate in which freshness underpins the overall richness.
Food pairings
Pairs with structured dishes such as roasted or grilled red meats, braised dishes and game. In Tuscan cuisine it accompanies bistecca alla fiorentina and stewed wild boar. It also works well with aged hard cheeses, thanks to its structure and freshness.
When to serve it
This is a red for occasions when you seek an intense, already harmonious profile, with room for further evolution. It’s best to uncork the bottle in advance and serve it in a large-bowled glass. Suitable for drinking now and for cellaring for several years.
