Description
What kind of wine is it
Il Guercio by Tenuta di Carleone is a red wine from Tuscany, made from Sangiovese grapes grown in vineyards at Radda in Chianti, in the province of Siena. It is a dry and focused wine with medium structure and fine tannins, crafted to pair seamlessly at the table. The choice to vinify and age in concrete tanks, with a small proportion of grapes fermenting with stems, aims to preserve a clear profile and a balanced texture.
Origin
The grapes come from vineyards located in Radda in Chianti, within the Siena area. Tenuta di Carleone was founded in 2012 by Karl Egger, supported by Sean O’Callaghan, and operates under the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture, with a minimal intervention winemaking approach. The name "Il Guercio" recalls Sean’s nickname.
How it’s made
The wine is made purely from Sangiovese. Vinification takes place in concrete tanks for about five months, with some of the grapes fermenting with stems. This is followed by about a year’s maturation in the same containers, a choice that avoids oak and preserves aromatic consistency and fruit clarity.
Tasting notes
In the glass, it appears a deep ruby red. The nose reveals aromas of dark berries and a delicate note of dark chocolate. On the palate, it is balanced and refined, with silky tannins and a long, clean finish in line with the bouquet.
Food pairings
It pairs naturally with medium-structured dishes. It is particularly recommended with savoury pies, semi-aged cheeses, and roast turkey, where its tannic structure and overall balance complement the dishes without overwhelming them.
When to serve
This red wine is ideal for convivial lunches and dinners, thanks to its precise and smooth profile. It shows well at around 16–18 °C; a brief aeration before serving, especially when young, helps open up the fruit and relax the tannins. It can be enjoyed immediately and, with proper storage, develops in the bottle over several years.
