Bava
Bava is a historic Piedmontese winery in Cocconato, on the hills of the Monferrato Astigiano, where the family has been growing vines since the 1600s. In 1911 the first family cellar was built; since then there have been more than a hundred harvests, and today the estate is jointly run by the fourth, fifth, and sixth generations.
The estate stretches between Monferrato and Langhe over about 80 hectares, 50 of which are under vine and 30 are woodland, hazelnut groves, and meadows. Alongside the historic vineyards in Cocconato, such as Bricco della Pieve, Rosingana and Cadodo, Bava tends the Scarrone cru in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of Barolo, and Cascina Pianoalto in Agliano Terme, from which Nizza DOCG is born.
Front and center are Piedmont’s native grape varieties: Barbera, Nebbiolo, Albarossa, Ruché, Cortese, Moscato Bianco and Malvasia di Schierano. The result is a broad range that spans from Barolo, Barbaresco and Barbera d'Asti Superiore Stradivario—whose label pays homage to the family’s passion for music—through to Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato, which Bava was the first to export beyond Italy. Monferrato Nebbiolo Superiore Serre di San Pietro 2022 received Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso.
The winery’s philosophy combines quality and respect for the environment: no herbicides, cover crops between the rows, natural fertilizers, rainwater harvesting, solar panels, lightweight bottles made from recycled glass and natural cork closures. In the cellar, wood is used judiciously, selecting the most suitable cask for each wine.
Family tradition, native varieties and a focus on sustainability make Bava one of the most authentic voices in the wines of the Langhe and Monferrato.
