Benanti
Benanti is one of the emblematic wineries of Etna, in Sicily. The family's passion for wine has deep roots in Viagrande, on the southeastern slope of the volcano, where wines were already being made from local grapes at the end of the 19th century. In 1988 Cavaliere Giuseppe Benanti founded the Tenuta di Castiglione, considered a starting point of contemporary Etna viticulture.
After more than 150 experimental micro-vinifications, the first bottles were released in 1990: Pietra Marina Etna Bianco Superiore and Rovittello Etna Rosso. In 1998, with the establishment at Monte Serra in Viagrande, Benanti became the first winery present on all slopes of Etna. Today the company is led by the sons Antonio and Salvino Benanti.
The vineyards, farmed according to organic principles, are located in Castiglione di Sicilia, Randazzo, Milo, Viagrande and Santa Maria di Licodia. Here only the native grape varieties Carricante, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grow, hand-harvested at low yields. Benanti has also selected and patented four indigenous Etna yeasts, the result of long research.
The range captures the volcano in all its nuances: from contrade such as Rinazzo, Cavaliere, Monte Serra, Dafara Galluzzo and Calderara Sottana to the reserves Rovittello and Serra della Contessa, up to the traditional-method Noblesse from Carricante, the first sparkling wine of Etna. In 2007 Pietra Marina was the first Etna wine to obtain the Tre Bicchieri del Gambero Rosso and Benanti was named Italian Winery of the Year.
Research, native varieties and deep respect for the land make Benanti a benchmark for discovering the great wines of Etna.
