Bodega 4 Kilos
4 Kilos Vinícola is a winery in Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, founded in August 2006 by Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero with the aim of creating wines that express the power and nuances of the grape, with an out-of-the-box approach and presentation. The name comes from the partners’ initial investment, 4 million pesetas: a modest sum for the industry, proving that a great wine is born from a drive for quality and from passion, rather than from capital.
The founders come from very different backgrounds. Francesc Grimalt is an oenologist, formerly a partner and technician at Ànima Negra, known for helping to rediscover Callet, an indigenous Balearic variety. Sergio Caballero is a musician, cofounder and codirector of the Sónar festival of advanced music and multimedia art.
The first wine, 4Kilos 2006, was born in a garage, with limited means but outstanding grapes, fermented also in refrigerated milk tanks. Since 2007 the winery has been based in an old sheep barn on the outskirts of Felanitx, converted together with Apolònia Viticultors, where 12Volts is also made.
The vineyards are located in various municipalities in the south and north of the island; therefore the wines are not part of any DO. The vines grow mainly on “Call Vermell” loam-clay soils, rich in iron oxide, and include Callet, Fogoneu, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Monastrell and Syrah. Viticulture is thoughtful and environmentally friendly, with spontaneous cover cropping, while in the cellar choices change every year depending on the vintage. 4 Kilos was named Bodega del Año by the Guía Peñín 2009 and by the Guía Gourmets 2012.
Creativity, a strong sense of place and a passion for the grape make 4 Kilos one of the most original voices in Mallorcan wine.
