Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a unique estate on the Bordeaux wine scene: it is the only château located within the city of Bordeaux, one of the last walled urban vineyards, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation. From 1584 to 1789 the property belonged to the order of the Carmelites, from which it takes its name; after the Revolution it passed to the Chantecaille family, a Bordeaux négociant.
At the end of 2010 the estate was acquired by Gruppo Pichet, owned by Diane and Patrice Pichet, which renovated the vineyard and built a new winery designed by Philippe Starck.
The vineyard extends over 29,6 hectares on Mindelian-era gravels resting on a clay-limestone subsoil, with an urban microclimate that protects against spring frosts and encourages early ripening. The blend, unusual for Bordeaux, comprises Merlot (41%), Cabernet Franc (39%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%).
The wine ages 18-24 months in barrique, with a production of about 40.000 bottles, including the second wine Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion. Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a rare gem of Bordeaux viticulture.
