Dominio de Atauta
Dominio de Atauta is a winery in Ribera del Duero located in the Atauta Valley, in the province of Soria, one of the most extreme and fascinating areas of the appellation. Here, at around 1,000 meters above sea level, the winemaking tradition has more than five centuries of history: the earliest evidence of vineyards in the area dates back to 1201 and the El Plantío complex, with 141 cellars and 25 lagares carved into the limestone rock, preserves its memory.
The heart of the project is a pre-phylloxera vineyard among the oldest in Europe, with 130–180-year-old vines spread across more than 700 plots. The age of the vines, the poor, shallow soils and extremely meticulous work result in minimal yields: each vine produces less than a bottle. The valley, 4 kilometers long and one kilometer wide, offers great soil diversity over a limestone bedrock, while the climate—with little rainfall, wide diurnal temperature swings and constant wind—favors slow, balanced ripening.
Farming is sustainable: the dense planting means everything must be done by hand, and fertilization relies solely on compost of animal and plant origin. The winery, built into the rock on a slope of the valley, is arranged over four levels to work by gravity; harvest is by hand and the wines age in around 600 French oak barriques. At the helm are Ismael Sanz for viticulture and Jaime Suárez for winemaking.
The range runs from the classics—Albillo Mayor from century-old vines, Parada de Atauta, Dominio de Atauta, a synthesis of 25 terroirs, and Dominio Dos Fincas—to the single-vineyard wines Valdegatiles, San Juan, La Roza and La Mala.
Century-old vines, altitude and a unique historical heritage make Dominio de Atauta one of the most distinctive expressions of Ribera del Duero.
