I Borboni
I Borboni is the Numeroso family’s winery in Lusciano, in the province of Caserta, entirely dedicated to Asprinio di Aversa, an ancient native Campanian grape variety. The family has owned about 20 hectares of vineyards since the second half of the eighteenth century, with vines trained to poplar trees in the traditional 'married vine' system, a true 'living legend' of Campanian viticulture.
For a long time the Numeroso family sold the grapes: at the beginning of the twentieth century they supplied around 100 tons of Asprinio a year to Buton, as well as to Cirio and to French buyers. At the end of the 1970s, when demand for grapes slumped, the family began experimenting with sparkling Asprinio and in 1982 registered the I Borboni trademark.
Cavaliere Nicola Numeroso, together with his brother Raffaele, was among the protagonists of the revival of Asprinio, a grape variety that was at risk of extinction and that in 1993 obtained the DOC Asprinio di Aversa. Today the tradition continues with Carlo Numeroso and Nicola, the founder’s son.
The heart of the estate is in the historic center of Lusciano: in the family home, dating back to the second half of the sixteenth century and restored between 1996 and 1998, the wines ferment and rest in tuff caves dug 15 meters underground, where humidity, darkness, and a constant temperature preserve the typicity of Asprinio. The range includes the semi-sparkling Asprinio Rivolta, metodo ancestrale, the Spumante Brut, the Vulpis line, the Vite Maritata, the age-worthy white Santa Patena, and the red Numeroso.
Innovation with respect for tradition and quality over quantity: with these values I Borboni safeguards and tells the story of the identity of Asprinio di Aversa.
