Ottella
Ottella is a Lugana winery based in San Benedetto di Lugana, in the municipality of Peschiera del Garda, in the heart of the denomination’s classic zone, on the southern shore of Lake Garda. The name comes from a legend: according to tradition, in the 1500s eight twins were born here, as evidenced by the coat of arms preserved in the Ottella courtyard. The Montresor family has been at the helm for four generations and, in 1905, according to the historian Giovan Battista Perez, was the only one producing Lugana in the Verona area.
It was Lodovico Montresor, wine entrepreneur and art collector, who gave the company its impetus; in 1964 he helped delineate the Lugana area, paving the way for the denomination’s creation in 1967. From the mid-1980s his son Francesco joined him, serving as president of the Consorzio di Tutela from 2007 to 2013, and in 1993 they were joined by his brother Michele. Today Ottella farms 90 hectares in Lugana, and the fourth generation—Lodovico and Lamberto—now work alongside their father and uncle.
The leading role is played by Trebbiano di Lugana, locally called Turbiana, an ancient native grape variety already mentioned by Catullus and whose genome is distinct from that of other Trebbiani, as recognized by studies at the University of Milan. It finds its fullest expression on the glacial-origin clays of the Lugana basin, left behind by the retreat of the ice that formed the morainic hills. The Montresor family’s goal is to create modern, distinctive wines that honor the soil–variety pairing.
The range includes Lugana DOC, Le Creete, Riserva Molceo, Back To Silence, Nasomatto, Gemei, Camposireso, Roses Roses and Prima Luce, as well as the sparkling wines Blanc de Blancs Brut and Roses Roses Brut, plus a grappa and olive oil. In 2013 the project for the new, contemporary winery began, a place where wine, art and nature meet; and since 2023 the company has embarked on the path toward Equalitas sustainability certification, publishing its own Sustainability Report.
Ethical and aesthetic values guide Ottella, a family story that has interpreted the Lugana terroir since 1905.
