Pala
Pala is a Sardinian winery based in Serdiana, in the south of the island, founded in 1950 with Salvatore Pala’s first harvest. The son of Battistino, Salvatore vinified for the first time, no longer only for family consumption, the grapes from the vineyards planted by his father in the countryside around Serdiana: Nuragus for the white, Monica with Pascale for the red.
Over time those wines have followed the evolution of Sardinian appellations, with Monica di Cagliari DOC in 1972 and Nuragus di Cagliari DOC in 1974. In the late 1990s, with the arrival of oenologist Fabio Angius, brought in by Mario Pala, the estate made a major step up in quality, entering international markets from 2000. Among the accolades the winery recalls, in 2014 Gambero Rosso named it Emerging Winery of the Year and awarded Tre Bicchieri to Cannonau Riserva. Today Pala is owned by Lia Tolaini and her family.
There are eight estates, from the calcareous-marly soils of Serdiana and Ussana, such as the Is Crabilis hill, to the dazzlingly white sands of Uras, Terralba and San Nicolò d’Arcidano, in the Oristano area. Here, since 2003, the company has acquired very old ungrafted vineyards, over one hundred and twenty years old, from which Essentija is born, the winery’s first single-varietal Bovale.
The range champions native Sardinian grape varieties: Vermentino Stellato and Soprasole, Nuragus Milleluci, Monica Oltreluna, Cannonau Centosere and Riserva, Bovale Essentija, alongside labels such as S'Arai, Entemari, Silenzi and the rosé Chiaro di Stelle. A tight-knit team shares the same vision: wines of the highest quality and authenticity, able to fully reflect the terroir of Serdiana.
Wild nature, millennia-old history and ancient grape varieties: since 1950, Pala has been telling the story of Sardinian wine.
