Ziobaffa
Ziobaffa is an Italian organic wine brand born from the crossroads of wine, surf, and film. The name comes from the nickname “Zio Baffa,” given by surfers on the Italian coast to the Californian director Jason Baffa, creator of the film Bella Vita, shot on 35 mm and dedicated to the surfer and artist Chris Del Moro and to his family’s homeland in Italy.
In September 2012 the crew arrived at Poggio al Casone, in Crespina, Tuscany, for the harvest: from the grapes of that vintage came the first bottle, Toscana 2012. The idea came from Piergiorgio Castellani, the fifth generation of a Tuscan winemaking family, who produced the wine and designed the bottle together with Jason Baffa, while Chris Del Moro hand-crafted the first labels. Ziobaffa is now a brand of Castellani S.p.A., based in Pontedera, in the province of Pisa.
The wines are certified organic: nothing synthetic is used in the vineyard, cover crops and wildflowers grow between the rows, the vines are dry-farmed and the harvest is done by hand. Toscana Rosso is made from Sangiovese with a touch of Syrah and Merlot, on hills of sandy clays rich in limestone; the range is completed by Vermentino, Pinot Grigio from the hills of western Sicily, and Prosecco DOC.
The brand draws inspiration from the world of surf, skateboarding, and the outdoors, with a simple message: “Everyone can be Ziobaffa”. Organic, contemporary wines for today’s drinker.
