Founded in 1051 by the Vallombrosan monks in the heart of Gaiole in Chianti, Badia a Coltibuono is a historic wine estate that has epitomized the region’s oenological excellence for nearly a millennium. The estate spans over 900 hectares, 64 of which are devoted to vineyards dominated by Sangiovese, with most of the land safeguarded by centuries-old woodlands. Distinguished by a strong commitment to sustainability, it was the first among the major Chianti producers to fully embrace organic farming. Rejecting global homogenization, the winery operates with full respect for biodiversity and natural rhythms, using controlled cover crops, organic fertilization, and native yeasts to ensure that every wine is an authentic expression of its terroir.

The production process is a harmonious meeting of technological innovation and age-old tradition. Gentle, gravity-flow vinification takes place in a modern facility in Monti in Chianti, while subsequent aging unfolds in the evocative underground cellars built by the monks in the 13th century. The true crown jewel of the estate, however, is its priceless Annate Storiche collection, created in the 1950s thanks to the pioneering vision of Piero Stucchi-Prinetti; he was the first to grasp Sangiovese’s extraordinary aging potential, leaving an archive of reserve wines that testifies to the profound and long-lived oenological history of Chianti Classico.
