The Granfondo del Gallo Nero was held on 24 September 2017 , a cycling race that retraces the roads of the Chianti Classico between open valleys and breathtaking hills . As shown by the same track and the stages of the competition, Chianti Classico is characterized by a very varied altitude profile . Factor that, combined with the different composition of the soils and the climatic variability , determines a very multifaceted panorama of environmental conditions and consequently of wines produced that it is impossible to summarize with the Chianti Classico denomination alone, and which has opened the doors to a long diatribe about the possibility of acquiring municipal mentions with an emphasis on greater recognition of territorial identities on a par with Burgundy crus .

The main grape of the Chianti Classico, Sangiovese , is in fact able to interpret and best express the different pedo-climatic characteristics, strengthening that fascinating relationship of interdependence that exists between a wine and its territory of origin.

Proceeding along the route of the Granfondo del Gallo Nero we explore the municipalities that the race crosses, outlining what are the peculiarities from a territorial and gustatory point of view.

THE WINES OF GAIOLE IN CHIANTI

The territory of Gaiole in Chianti is very large and covers at least three to four different types of soil, among which clay and sandstone prevail, with altitudes that vary respectively from 150 to 650 meters above sea level. The result is elegant, full-bodied and fresh wines, of great balance .

Among the most representative wineries of this municipality we find Badia a Coltibuono, Geografico, Barone Ricasoli which with its Gran Selezione Colledilà 2013 has achieved the prestigious recognition of the Tre Bicchieri del Gambero Rosso, as well as Castello di Ama with its Gran Selezione San Lorenzo 2013 .

The wines of Greve in Chianti

The territory of Greve in Chianti extends astride the Greve torrent, with a significant difference between the left and right banks of the river: nervous wines that are granted over time similar to those of Radda on the left bank , characterized by the presence of limestone formations with clay skeletons, and wines characterized by a kindness typical of Northern Italy productions, open and ready to drink , however able to age gracefully, on the right side of the river where the sandstone component prevails.

Among the most representative wineries of this municipality we find the Tenute Folonari, Castelli del Grevepesa, Cavalli - Tenuta degli Dei, Fontodi, Castello dei Rampolla , whose Chianti Classico 2014 for 5 consecutive years has been recognized with 90 points out of 100 or more by the magazine International Wine Spectator, Querciabella who with his Chianti Classico Riserva obtained 91 points out of 100 by the famous critic Robert Parker and Vignamaggio, whose 2013 Gran Selection Riserva di Monna Lisa is a 5 Bunches for the Bibenda guide.

The wines of San Casciano, San Donato in Poggio and Poggibonsi

Very different from a geological point of view compared to the other areas of the Chianti Classico, San Casciano is considered almost a border area, where siliceous pebbles mixed with clay prevail. The result is less structured but very interesting wines from the point of view of aromas , as the climatic conditions of this territory and the position shielded from strong solar radiation are conducive to a better development of the fruity component. Among the most representative wineries of this municipality we find Castello Monsanto, Coli, Fattoria di Luiano, Isole and Olena, La Sala, Marchesi Antinori, with the famous Tignanello estate , Melini, Pasolini dall'Onda, Principe Corsini and Isole Olena.

The wines of Radda in Chianti

Radda in Chianti is among the areas of the Chianti Classico most appreciated by wine critics . The soil of this municipality consists of Alberese, a calcareous and partly clayey soil from which generally derive wines , sometimes grumpy, which take time to open but which will reward those who will be able to wait patiently for their evolution.

Among the most representative wineries of this municipality we find Castelvecchi, Borgo Salcetino , held in the Chianti Classico area owned by the famous Friulian winegrower Dorino Livon whose Chianti Classico 2014 obtained the prestigious recognition of the Tre Bicchieri del Gambero Rosso last year, ending with Val delle Val Corti , whose Chianti Classico has always confirmed the Three Glasses in recent years.
