Cultivated mainly in the Marche and Abruzzo, it probably owes its name to the fact that, by virtue of its early ripening , it was the grape most loved by the sheep in the period of the passage of their transhumance , towards mid-September.
The low quantitative yield was about to decree its extinction, until it was rediscovered in the 90s , when it became clear that it was precisely this characteristic that made it an exceptional grape. The result was the birth, shortly thereafter, of the denominations IGT Pecorino Terre di Chieti and the DOC Offida Pecorino .
The wine from this variety is generally characterized by a straw yellow color, the nose reveals floral and fruit notes with white flesh. With a good structure and persistence , so much so that we also speak of a " red dressed in white ", it goes well with structured dishes such as baked fish, white meats, medium-aged cheeses.
